WILLIAM!!!

OK, so I'm sorry about all this lazy-arse posting of Youtubery I've been doing lately, but when I saw this one I just HAD to post it. It's pure BC ridiculousness. It's also Microsoft ridiculousness, which makes it even more utterly brilliant.

It's a clip from a 12 minute 1980s promotional video for Windows 386 which, up until this point in the film, is quite normal and dull. But something happened in the production studio around the 7 minute mark, and clearly the monkeys working on putting this thing together collectively lost their minds.

Should you wish to see the video in its entirety, you can click here. Otherwise just enjoy the below snippet.

And if you're wondering about the title of this post, wait until the 3.10 mark.

  1. I love the subversive military hacking type soundtrack. It could work equally well as a porno flick. In fact I think I've seen it. "Gary sticks his ram into Mandy's Window."

  3. fuck, this WOULD make a brilliant porno for programming geeks.. although, I think they'd just go moist for all the retro coding..

  4. Did they have crack in the 80s? They must have, because the people who made this video were clearly smoking some.

I love the fact that the computer has 640K of memory. Oooooh. 640k!

  5. I love how they combine advanced computer graphics with feminism too, but keep it real for all the stay at home moms who just want her to give it all up to find a nice husband.

  8. though i can gather from the comments what is going on in this one. i felt the pain of windows 3.1 for my entire undergrad degree. i think it was in black and white with pixels like lego blocks. which i guess shows my vintage.

  9. Very good, Linda.

Loved the botched up midi-recorded mission: impossible theme in the middle. That 5/4 drum beat is sooo hard to get the hang of. (Hey, U2 couldn't even do it in 5/4)

  10. oh god, that was horrendous. but don't worry, microsoft used all of its creative synergy and serendipitous confluence and learned from it's media mistakes. a couple of years ago Microsoft UK did some fake initiation videos with man/god Ricky Gervais. check these out if you have 40 minutes spare.

  11. Hey, I had that hair and those glasses in the 80's. I was forever being told I looked too young, so I bought the bug-eyed specs to look more mature.
Not so sure it was a successful strategy, more like my own personal Microsoft Vista I think...

  12. (And talking of bug-eyed specs...)

Hey PetStarr, hope you’ve recovered after being scared bejeezusless by the YouTube clip on my site! I’ve put a warning on — wondered if you thought that was a good idea. Most people enjoy a good scare once in a while. Trouble is, with the warning on the effect’s probably just about lost.

  14. I love the fact that they made it a selling point that she was typing faster than the words were appearing on the screen.
